Raiders suffer from slow start

EXMORE—The Southampton Academy Raiders opened up their football season with a tough 49-0 loss to the Broadwater Academy Vikings on Saturday afternoon on the Eastern Shore.
The Vikings outscored the Raiders 35-0 in the first quarter. The Vikings then outscored the Raiders 7-0 in the second quarter.
The Vikings’ last points came in the third quarter as they outscored the Raiders 7-0.
The Vikings improved to 1-1 overall, while the Raiders fell to 0-1 overall.
The Raiders had 10 first downs while the Vikings had 7. The Raiders finished with 271 yards of offense while the Vikings finished with 208 yards of offense.
The Raiders lost two of their five fumbles, while the Vikings had no fumbles. The Raiders had 3 penalties for 15 yards, while the Vikings had 1 penalty for 5 yards.
The Raiders had 5 turnovers while the Vikings had none.
The Vikings started their scoring on a 3-yard touchdown run by senior Walker Lewis with 8:42 left in the first quarter to make it 7-0. Junior Matt Kelley made the extra point.
The Vikings next scoring play came on an 82-yard touchdown run by Lewis with 5:09 left in the first quarter that made the score 14-0. Kelley made the extra point.
The Vikings then made it 21-0 when Turner ran it in 1 yard for the touchdown with 2:39 left in the first quarter. Kelley made the extra point.
Turner then threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Kelley with 2:17 left in the first quarter that made it 28-0. Kelley made the extra point.
The Vikings final touchdown of the quarter occurred when senior Jonathan Sharpley returned an interception 15 yards for the defensive touchdown that made it 35-0 with 53 seconds left. Kelley made the extra point.
The Vikings only touchdown of the second quarter came when sophomore Connor Hennessey ran the ball in 38 yards for the touchdown that made it 42-0 with 5:27 left in the half. Kelley made the extra point.
The Vikings final touchdown of the game came in the third quarter when Hennessey returned an interception 105 yards for the Vikings second defensive touchdown of the game that made it 49-0 with 8 minutes. Kelley made the extra point.
The player of the game for the Raiders was Junior Craig who finished with 9 rushes for 33 yards, and had 1 catch for 41 yards. Sophomore David Bogese added 51 rushing yards on 7 carries for the Raiders. Sophomore John Hinkle added 49 rushing yards on 9 carries for the Raiders. Freshman Wesley Barnes added 45 rushing yards on 7 carries and 2 catches for 17 yards. Senior Tyler Lass finished 5 for 11 for 75 yards and 3 interceptions.
The Raiders travel to Blackstone Friday to play the Kenston Forest Kavaliers at 7:30 p.m. The Vikings travel to Chincoteague High School for a 7:30 p.m. game.
