CAPRON—A Capron man died from injuries he received in a car crash Tuesday, Virginia State Police said. A second man also was injured.
Police spokeswoman Sgt. Michelle Cotten said Kyle Sinclair Burks, 21, of the 18000 block of Douglas Drive, was the driver in a single-vehicle crash that occurred at 6:35 p.m. on Virginia Route 671, General Thomas Highway, about a quarter-mile west of Virginia Route 680, Bishop Poquoson Road.
According to Cotten, Burks was driving westbound in a 1998 Oldsmobile Intrigue when the car ran off the road to the right, struck a ditch, and overturned several times.
Both Burks and a passenger, 23-year-old Seth Michael Dmick, were ejected from the vehicle, Cotten said.
Cotten said Burks was driving recklessly. Speed and alcohol were both factors in the crash, and neither victim was wearing a seat belt, she said.
Burks and Dmick were initally transported to Southampton Memorial Hospital, but Burks was later sent to the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond, Cotten said, where he died from his injuries at 1:22 a.m. Wednesday.
Burks and two other men, Aaron Richard Howard, 20 and Justin Thomas Rainey, 23 were arrested and charged in Southampton County in early December with one count each of violation of sepulcher and attempted grand larceny.
The men were accused of digging up the grave of Confederate Maj. Joseph Ezra Gillette at the Gillette family cemetery east of Courtland on June 11.
