FRANKLIN — About 25 people have applied for a street sweeper’s job with the City of Franklin.
Crystal Ward, administrative secretary with the city’s Human Resource Department, said the number of applicants for the position, which pays $22,297 annually and includes benefits, is about normal.
“Sometimes we get as many as 50 (applicants for an opening),” Ward said.
This position requires applicants to have a Commercial Driver’s License, she said. That could by why only 25 applied.
The street sweeper position is among 52 within the city’s Public Works Department.
Public Works maintains streets and does snow removal, maintains city vehicles including for schools and social services, garbage collection, building and grounds maintenance and custodial services for 15 buildings, mosquito control, maintenance and operational services for two city cemeteries, provides and delivers water and does sewer collection for Franklin and Southampton and Isle of Wight counties, and manages and operates Franklin Municipal Airport.
The turnover in the department is low, Ward said.
“I guess it’s the benefits,” she said.
Employees get health insurance, retirement and 17 days of paid vacation and sick time after one year.
Ward said she expects an applicant to be hired for the street sweeper’s position within a few weeks. The new person will fill a vacancy created by a resignation.
