FRANKLIN—Verta Jackson, whose term on the Franklin School Board ends June 30, said Friday she plans to seek nomination for a second three-year term.
The City Council will hold a public hearing during its Monday, May 24, meeting to field nominees for the School Board’s Ward 5 seat, now held by Jackson. She was appointed to the seat in 2007 by a unanimous vote of the council.
Jackson said she hasn’t heard of anyone else interested in the nomination, but that doesn’t mean there won’t be another nominee.
“We don’t know until we get there,” she said.
Ward 5 Councilwoman Mary Hilliard said she supports Jackson for a second term. Hilliard doesn’t expect any issues surrounding Monday’s nomination.
“You never can tell about public hearings, but I don’t expect it to be,” Hilliard said.
Jackson said the hiring of Dr. Michelle Belle as school superintendent last year was a highlight of her term on the board.
“We have selected a very good superintendent that is in tune with our students as well as what’s going on in our school system,” Jackson said. “And we’re working well with her.”
The School Board’s Ward 5 seat is the only one up for appointment this year. The person chosen by the City Council will be seated July 1.
Five seats were up for appointment last year. The board’s Ward 3 seat, held by Johnetta Nichols, will be up for appointment next year.
The council meeting begins at 7 p.m. at City Hall.
