SURRY—Joseph Fowler felt more than Sunday’s near 100-degree heat while drag racing his motorcycle at Slades Park in Surry.
The 31-year-old also was feeling the pressure.
Fowler’s father, brother and nephew had each won their classes earlier in the day, and it was up to him to make family history. Racing on a 400-foot-long dirt track at up to 100 mph, Joseph Fowler beat Charlie Keeter of Courtland by half a bike’s length.
The win meant for the first time in the 40-year history of Fowler Racing that four family members won their respective classes. Other winners were Joseph Fowler’s father, Daniel Fowler, 55, of Courtland; Joseph’s brother, Danny, 33, of Sedley; and Danny’s son, Cameron, 6.
“It was great,” said Joseph Fowler, who lives in Newsoms. “We were hollering and screaming. It’s the first time we all took first place. Usually either someone will mess up or something happens with the bikes.”
“It was really exciting when Joseph crossed the finish line,” said Stacy Coultas of Courtland, whose 7-year-old son, Hunter, also races at Slades. “We told him, ‘It’s all on you, you gotta do it.’ It was one of those deals that may never happen again.”
Daniel Fowler drag raced on asphalt for 30 years before going to dirt; his brother, Joseph, raced on the asphalt for 20 years and dirt for 10.
When Danny and Joseph were 12 and 10, they got Kawasaki 80s and began racing. Danny’s son Cameron was 3 when he started racing on a Yamaha PW50. He has since moved up to a KTM Junior Pro 50.
Cameron won his first race ever in June.
“I think I was more happy than he was,” Danny Fowler said. “I’ve been watching his racing since 2007. He’s a really good sport.”
Joseph Fowler’s class on Sunday involved a double elimination competition. He defeated Keeter earlier in the day and went into his final race undefeated. Keeter had also won the rest of his races to get into the finals.
