FRANKLIN—A large woman wielding a butcher knife robbed Franklin Eagle Mart at 1397 Carrsville Highway at 9:40 p.m. Thursday, police said.
Isle of Wight Sheriff’s investigator J.P. Hopko said the robber got into a fight with store clerk Serdar Rustemoglu during the armed robbery.
“She had a butcher knife, and she cut him twice and bit him twice,” Hopko said. “She just came in and came up behind him.”
Hopko said he’s not sure if Rustemoglu was cut on his arms during the fight or from attempting to get the knife from the suspect. The clerk was treated for injuries at the store, which is just beyond Airway Center plaza on what’s also known as Business Route 58.
The robber — who got away with only a ball cap, but left hers behind — was caught on video both inside and outside the store, Hopko said. She is described as 5-foot-10 to 6-foot tall, weighing 275-pounds, wears her hair in dreadlocks and has beady eyes.
She arrived and left on foot and was wearing a white-T-shirt and black shorts. The ball cap she lost was black with an orange “U” on the front and “Industrial University” on the back. She stole a hat that had “New York” on it.
Store clerk Laquetta Clark, who was not working last night, said she learned about the robbery at 6:30 a.m. today from a customer.
“When I came in at 6 a.m., I had no idea,” Clark said. “A customer asked me ‘what happened?’”
The customer had seen the police cars around the store on Thursday night.
News of the robbery terrified Clark, who has worked for Franklin Eagle Mart for two months without a problem.
“I have never had a problem working here,” she said. “Everyone is so friendly.”
