FRANKLIN—The Franklin High School golf team has clinched the Tri-Rivers District title and qualified for the regional tournament hosted by Northampton at Bay Creek Golf Club in Cape Charles on Friday, Oct. 1.
Franklin Golf Coach Dave Lease believes if the Broncos, who are 15-1, play well at the regional qualifier, they have a shot at the state tournament. Lease also noted that sophomore Zack Hopkins could qualify individually for the state tourney.
“Zack has an outside chance of making it to state (if he gets scores in the) 80s or 90s,” Lease said.
Hopkins has shot 99s and 100s in matches this season, which opened Aug. 10. He has a 101 average.
Hopkins is among three Broncos ranked among the top six in the district. He is ranked third, junior Tony Bland fifth and sophomore Grant Scarboro sixth.
The district tournament will be held later this month at Dogwood Trace Golf Course in Petersburg.
The top two teams from the regional qualifier will go to the state tournament as well as the best six individuals who are not a part of those two teams.
In action from Tuesday, the Broncos defeated Windsor and Surry during a home district match at Cypress Cove County Club. Franklin scored a total of 474, Windsor 480 and Surry 490. Sussex also participated, but does not have a full team.
Jared Lathan from Sussex had the winning score of 92.
Lease said he was disappointed with the match.
“We were playing really good earlier,” he said. “We shot about 420 (at matches) at the beginning of the year.”
Tuesday’s opening day of school may have affected the guys’ play, Lease said.
Franklin had a district match on Wednesday in Windsor. Results were not available as of presstime. The Broncos will conclude the season with district matches in Surry and Sussex on Sept. 14 and 16, respectively.
