ISLE OF WIGHT—“A lot better” is how Isle of Wight Academy Football Coach Dale Chapman responded to the Chargers’ 34-7 homecoming win over Broadwater Academy on Friday night.

Having few problems with the Vikings, the Chargers had a big first half, shutting out their opponents 27-0.

Charger quarterback Ben Epps scored on the team’s first possession on a 28-yard run. Charles Clamen booted the extra point to give the Chargers a 7–0, first-quarter lead.

After the Chargers’ defense forced a punt, Epps scored again on a 7-yard keeper. On the drive, the Vikings received two penalties for roughing the passer and one pass interference calls.

Clamen’s kick advanced the score to 14-0.

In the second quarter, Charger running back Charles Keyt crossed the goal line on a 25-yard run. Clamen’s kick was blocked, but the Chargers led 20-0.

Chapman was impressed with some of the good plays the Chargers made. One was a fake run by Keyt, who passed to Matt Bratton, which was good for 39 yards. This set up the next score for the Chargers as Keyt powered over the goal line on a one-yard run. This advanced the score to 27-0.

Epps completed a 28-yard touchdown pass to Bratton in the fourth quarter for the final score.

The Vikings scored late in the fourth quarter on a drive starting on their 28-yard line that took more than 5 minutes off the clock. The score came on a 2-yard run, and the extra point was good.

The Chargers ended up with a total of 226 yards on the ground and 98 passing yards. They also had 22 first downs.

Epps led the rushing for the Chargers with 108 yards. He also picked off a Viking pass and returned it for 13 yards in the third quarter. Keyt rushed for 95 yards.

The next two weeks will have the Chargers on the road with their last home game on Oct. 29 against Southampton Academy.
