RICHAMOND—In a showdown for first place in the Southeastern District, Southampton High School lost in four sets to league leader Powhatan on Tuesday night.

After winning a hard-fought first set 25-20, Southampton fell 25-19, 25-12 and 25-10. The Lady Indians fell to 16-3 on the season and 8-2 in the district.

Southampton’s Regina Artis led with 17 kills and 6 blocks; Megan Revelle had 9 kills and 3 digs. Marisa Cabell made 5 kills, 1 block and 6 digs.

Teammate Candace Earls had 3 kills, 6 assists and 4 digs. Janie Young made 2 kills, Leah Burgess had 1 kill and Kendra Edwards made 21 assists and 1 kill.

As a team, players only had two service errors on the night.

“Powhatan is a tough team with many positional players that they continue to rotate in and stay fresh,” said Southampton Coach Chad Brock. “I am proud of the effort we gave. With probably four or more players that will go on to play college ball, they just wear you down. We gave it all we had, but in the end they were still strong.”

With four games remaining, the Indians expect to remain in second place and host a district match.

“We have matches remaining against Parkview, Nottoway, Greensville and Prince Edward,” Brock said. “Parkview pushed us to five sets earlier this season, so I expect another close match when they come in Thursday night.”

“Nottoway is always dangerous, and Greensville is much improved this year with the addition of some new players,” he continued. “We caught Prince Edward on an off night, so I expect them to come in ready to play for our last regular season match.”

The Southampton junior varsity girls lost 27-25 and 25-23 to Powhatan Tuesday for their second loss of the season. The Lady Indians remain in first place with an overall record of 12-2 and 8-2 in district.

The junior varsity team was led by Madison Cabell 6 kills, Madeleine Kahle 5 kills, Kaylee Edwards 4 kills, Lindsey Harrup 3 kills, Sam Billups 5 assists and 1 kill, and Grayson Drake, 6 assists 1 kill.
