ISLE OF WIGHT—“Tonight was our night,” remarked Isle of Wight Head Coach Dale Chapman after the Chargers wiped out rival Southampton Academy 48-6 on Friday night.
IWA is 5-4 . The Raiders came into the game with a 6-2 record and ranked fourth in the state. But their offense could not get it going.
“We are pretty banged up,” Raider Coach Dale Marks said after the game.
Southampton Academy was missing several key players, which could have made a difference.
The Chargers scored on their first possession after Zeb Warnick intercepted a Raider pass. Greg Chaffer carried it over from the 2-yard line, and Charles Clamen added the extra point.
The Raiders on their next possession started on the 14-yard line and scored quickly on a 68-yard run by Marlin McClelland. The kick for the extra point failed, and the score was 7-6.
In the second quarter, Charger Mathew Wise recovered a Raider fumble deep in Raider territory. Ben Epps on a keeper crossed the goal on a 10-yard run, and the kick by Clamen put the Chargers up 14-6.
“We did some things on defense,” Chapman said.
And it was the defense that added the next score as John Hibbard picked off a Raider pass and returned it 15 yards for another Charger touchdown. The Clamen kick missed the mark, but the Chargers were up 20-6.
The Raiders entered the red zone for the last time of the game with less than a minute left in the first half. With only seconds remaining, and the ball on the 9-yard line, the Chargers sacked the quarterback and took a 20-6 led at the half.
Opening the second half on their first possession, the Chargers reached pay dirt again following a 28-yard run by CC Johnson. The Clamen kick pushed the score to 27-6.
After a Raider fumble and recovery by Charger Charles Keyt, he later scored on a 20-yard run. The Clamen kick was good, and the score was 34-6 for the Chargers.
On the next Raider possession, the quarterback fumbled, and it was picked up by Corbin Blair and returned 13 yards for the next touchdown. The Clamen kick was good, and the score was now 41-6.
Zeb Warnick added the last touchdown for the Chargers on a 29-yard run. The Clamen kick was good, and the score was 48-6.
“It was a tough game, but the Chargers are a good team,” Marks said. “We still have a chance to enter the playoffs; we have to wait to see how it all winds out.”
Leading the Raiders in rushing was McClelland with 109 yards.
For the Chargers, Keyt led in rushing with 146 yards. The Chargers had a total of 322 yards rushing.
