SUFFLOK—Forward Gavin Horton’s 3-pointer in the final three minutes of Tuesday’s game followed by his foul shot was the turning point for Windsor’s battle against Nansemond Suffolk Academy. The Dukes held on for a 60-49 win.

“The momentum had already shifted in our favor, but that one play put us over the top and secured our win,” said second-year Duke Coach Chris Smith.”(It was a) very good win for us, not only our first win in three years, but

one where we had to fight and execute until the end. It’s a good game to build on, which is what we plan on doing.”

Winsdor led 11-10 after the first quarter, and then NSA held a 34-32 halftime lead. Windsor led by 1 at the end of the third quarter.

Center Tony Walton led the Dukes in scoring with 26 points and in rebounds with 13. Michael Vines added 9 points and led in assists with 4.

Guard R.J. Edwards added 7 points, 8 boards and 4 assists.

In other action, Windsor lost 75-43 to Rappahannock.

The Raiders hit four, 3-pointers and a lay-up in

the first three minutes to jump out to a 14-0 lead over the Dukes.

“The rest of the game was close,” Smith said. “We came out slow in our first game of the year and spotted them 14 before we finally got things going. We played good basketball the rest of the game, but we were never able to make up those initial 14 points.”

Walton scored 23 points and made 12 rebounds. Horton added 9 points. Edwards made 3 assists.

Windsor is 1-1 overall and 0-0 in the Tri-Rivers District.
