WAKEFIELD—Tidewater Academy senior Mike Greene tied his season-high 33 points during Friday’s 63-52 win over Steward School.
The win broke a three-way tie for first place in the Virginia Commonwealth Conference between Tidewater Academy, Steward and Amelia Academy. Tidewater and Amelia are 8-1, while Steward has two losses; the Warriors will travel to Amelia for a 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 2, game.
The Warriors got off to a 18-9 first-quarter start, but rebounded.
“We started off slow, and we got just got more comfortable with the game when (Stewards) 6-foot-9 Adjeha Baru got into foul,” said Tidewater Coach Walter Westbrook.
At the half, the Warriors trailed 24-22 before outscoring Steward 41-28 in the second half.
Junior Warrior Lamont Moore scored 11 points and led with 12 rebounds. Senior Ferley Yerby made 8 assists.
Steward’s only player in double figures was Baru with 29 points.
“I just thought we played extremely hard the whole ball game,” Westbrook said. “With two minutes to go, it was a 3-point ball game, and we finished strong.”
The Warriors were 10-for-12 from the free-throw line in the final two minutes.
