LaVerne George ‘Pick’ Pickles

LaVerne George “Pick” Pickles, age 105, a resident of Canton , Ohio, formerly of Franklin, passed away on February 8, 2011. Born September 4, 1905 in Jackson, Michigan, he was the son of Sam and Erma (Woods) Pickles. He graduated Jackson (MI) High School in 1923 and attended Michigan Agriculture College, now Michigan State University.
He was married to Marjorie Handeyside 58 years until her death in 1984. After Marjorie’s death Mr. Pickles married Edna Boyce. They were married 12 years and lived in Ocala, Florida, and Abingdon, Virginia. In 2003 he moved to Franklin, Virginia and from there he moved to North Canton, Ohio in 2008.
While living in Franklin he was a member of Westminster Reformed Presbyterian Church in Suffolk, serving as a greeter and was active at the James L. Camp Jr. YMCA.
He is survived by a son, Richard (Nancy) of North Canton, Ohio, granddaughters Carolyn Rohrer and Elizabeth(Tim) Lamb of Canton, Ohio, and great-granddaughter, Natalie Rohrer of North Canton, Ohio. Also stepsons, Edward (Gay) Boyce, Bedford, Virginia, Douglas (Grace) Boyce, Franklin, and stepdaughter-in-law Ruth Ann Boyce, Detroit, Michigan. He was preceded in death by stepson, Donald Boyce. He was dearly loved by his many step-grandchildren.
Mr. Pickles donated his body for medical research. A memorial service will be held on a date to be determined.
In lieu of a memorial gift he wished for everyone to “love one another”.
