PETERSBURG—No. 2-ranked Isle of Wight Academy at 1 p.m. today, May 20, will vie for the state softball title in the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association.
The Lady Chargers will play undefeated, top-ranked Kenston Forest at the Petersburg Sports Complex. Kenston Forest on Thursday defeated 2009 and 2010 state champs Tidewater Academy 9-0 at the sports complex to get into the Division 3 title game.
“We were undefeated at this park,” said TA Coach Brent Lowe. “I think these kids made a great achievement to get to the state semifinals. I had some younger kids come up who improved all season. Sometimes we slip back a little and we make mistakes. There were only four teams in the state playing today.”
IWA defeated Broadwater 12-4, also in Petersburg, behind the pitching of Hailey Glover, who struck out five and gave up four hits.
“The girls did a good job today,” said IWA Coach Chris Hooper. “This is what we’ve been playing for all season.”
The Lady Chargers won their last state title in 2008, defeating Tidewater Academy, and were eliminated in the semifinals the last two years by Kenston Forest.
Also for the Lady Chargers on Thursday, Sarah Bowyer went 3-for-5 with four RBIs and scored 3 runs; Kenzie Conner, 2-for-4; Shelby Jurewicz, 2-for-4 with 3 runs; and Brooke Small, 2-for-4 with two runs.
As for No. 4-ranked Tidewater Academy, Taylor Warner was tagged with the loss.
“She did OK, but she’s been fighting an injury all year,” Lowe said.
Tidewater about a month ago lost 7-4 to IWA.
