Local rock band in contest

A local rock band is vying against more than 160 groups to appear on stage at the Virginia Beach Amphitheater on Thursday, Sept. 1, for the Rockstar Energy Drink Uproar Festival.
Ten bands with the most online votes will continue to the finals; as of Wednesday, Land of Dust, was in 10th place, according to member Scott Phillips of Franklin.
Land of Dust was formed about three years ago. Its members also include Brian Cross of Franklin, Travis Benson of Sedley, John Pevahouse of Carrsville and Ross McLeod of Capron.

People can cast one vote per day per e-mail account through Tuesday, Aug. 16.
As for Land of Dust’s upcoming appearances, the band will play on Saturday, Aug. 6, at Zakk’s Coffeehouse in Murfreesboro, N.C.; 9:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 19, at Geared Up Rock Bar in Virginia Beach; and 9 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 22, at Fred’s restaurant in Franklin.
• Speaking of contests, I see that Jennell Riddick, the wife of a Franklin pastor and a finalist for the next Face of Fox 43, has garnered 27,994 online votes. As of Thursday, the 29-year-old wife of Dwight Riddick, minister for First Baptist Church, was in third place. The first place candidate had 59,233.
Online voting makes up 25 percent of the total points for contestants. The contest also involves judges from the television station.

• Trevor Cumbey, Alex and Chip Blythe, and Jackie and Annie Misken raised $651 for Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters while hosting a lemonade stand at Farm Fresh in Chesapeake.
Trevor is the son of Becky and Dean Cumbey. Alex and Chip are the sons of Don Blythe, whose fiancé is Barbie Misken, the mother of Jackie and Annie.
The youths’ grandparents are Don and Lynn Blythe and Joy and Don Craddock.
