Lady Saints take second in D.C. tournament

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Nansemond-Suffolk Academy’s girls’ volleyball team opened its season Saturday, going 4-1 and finishing as runner-up out of 12 schools in the Fragile X Tournament at St. John’s College High School in Washington, D.C.
The Lady Saints cruised through the competition, not dropping a set, until the final game against Academy of the Holy Cross from Kensington, Md.
NSA beat Holy Cross in the first round 25-14, 25-20. The Lady Saints kept going against Sidwell Friends School (25-16, 25-12), Maret (25-18, 25-19) and Trinity Episcopal in the semifinals (25-11, 25-17).
The Tartans avenged their loss to NSA in the tournament final, winning 25-22, 25-11, 20-25, 25-19.
NSA senior Morgan Daughtry made the All-Tournament Team. Daughtry totaled 25 digs, 16 kills and 10 aces in the five matches.
Setter Quinby Hines had 153 assists, or an average of 12.8 assists per set, and 17 aces.
NSA’s hitting was led by Tori Dail with 54 kills, 21 digs, eight aces and four blocks and Kaylor Nash with 49 kills, 23 digs and two blocks. Claire Shields led NSA in digs with 36.
Last season, NSA finished 17-9 and in the state quarterfinals. The Lady Saints finished second in the Tidewater Conference Tournament to Cape Henry, the three-time running state champion in Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association Div. II.
The Lady Saints travel to Cape Henry Thursday, Sept. 8, at 6:30 p.m.
