FRANKLIN—Last year’s 42-23 loss to Franklin must’ve motivated the Indians to defeat the Broncos 34-14 on Friday night.

Fans filled the stands and sidelines at Armory Field for the annual Franklin-Southampton Bragging Rights Football Classic.

The Indians took advantage of an opening drive turnover by the Broncos to get on the scoreboard first. Forcing the Broncos to punt, the Indians were set up for their first score after a bad snap.

Southampton started its first drive on the Bronco 26-yard line. Jaron White crossed the goal on an 8-yard run. The kick was no good and the Indians were up 6-0.

Early in the second quarter, Indians quarterback Mason Wright connected on a 10-yard touchdown pass to Karon Evans. The extra point kick by Russell Balance was good to push the Indians ahead 13-0 at the half.

After trading punts by each team in the third quarter, Evans returned a Franklin punt 55 yards to the Bronco 12-yard line. Reaching the red zone after a carry by White, Saiquan Mason scored on a 2-yard run. Ballance booted the extra point and the Indians led 20-0.

Early in the fourth quarter, Mason broke free on a 36-yard touchdown run and the Ballance kick was good.

The Broncos continued their ground attack with the running of Travis Brown and Latrell Lane. With 4:31 left in the game, Bronco quarterback Delvontae Boone rushed for a three-yard touchdown. The two-point conversion failed, but the Broncos were on the board, trailing 27-6.

The Broncos attempted an onside kick, which failed and gave the ball to the Indians at midfield. The Indians struck quickly on an eight-yard touchdown pass from Mason Wright to Jamal Johnson. The Ballance kick was good and the score was 34-6.

The Broncos added their last score in the last minute of the game on a one-yard quarterback keeper by Boone. Brown scored the two-point conversion.

“We lost, we don’t make excuses,” said Franklin Coach Darren Parker. “We have to get ready for next week’s game with Lancaster. We are proud of our kids.”

Broncos had 254 yards on the ground and were led by Brown with 82 yards and Lane with 67 yards.

“It feels good, we came out and executed the game plan and the guys played hard and did not give in,” said Indians Coach Wes Griffith.

The Indians had 277 yards on the ground. They were led by Mason with 134 yards and White with 103.
