SURRY—The Nottoway Indian Tribe moved its annual Pow Wow into the Surry Recreation Center due to Saturday’s rain.
On Sunday, the clouds cleared and the event was returned to the outdoors.
Arena director Leroy Hardy prepared participants for the grand entry. Master of ceremonies John “Blackfeather” Jefferies made opening remarks and the color guards followed. Nottoway Indian Chief Lynette Allston of Capron led the processional.
Serving on the drums were members of the Yough-Ta-Nund and Na-Ma-Wo-Chi tribes.
On Sunday, spectators experienced intertribal dancing, vendors with Indian crafts, demonstrations, storytelling and native American cooking.
Aztec Indian dancers of Mexico also performed.
