SOUTH HILL—Southampton and Park View high schools will vie for the Southside District title during the 9 a.m. Monday, Sept. 26, district tournament at South Hill Country Club, which is Park View’s home course.
After Southampton lost 156-144 to Park View during Thursday’s final regular season match, the teams tied at 4-4.
“We played really well yesterday, they just played exceptionally well,” said Southampton Coach William “Buddy” Whitehurst. “They brought their ‘A’ game. We had three guys shoot in the 30s and came up 12 shots short.”
Park View and Southampton have gone back and forth this season. Southampton won the first and third 18-hole matches and Park View won the second and fourth. Then Southampton won two nine-hole matches in a row before dropping two in a row.
Southampton’s first win of the season was its first win in 18 years.
Whitehurst isn’t too concerned about Park View having the home-field advantage.
“They might be familiar with it, but they still have to golf,” he said. “I don’t use that as a crutch. We just have to get out there and perform.”
Monday’s winner will qualify for the regional tournament. Even if Southampton does not qualify as a team, Whitehurst believes Lewis Mayes, Billy Britton and Jordan Francis could qualify as individuals.
As for Thursday’s match, Mayes took first overall with a 36 on the par-35 course. Britton and Francis scored a 38 and were in a four-way tie for third. Steve Rhinard and Brandon Munford both shot a 44 to finish in the top 10.
