SOUTH HILL—Southampton High School’s golf team on Monday took its first Southside District title in 18 years and won the district tournament after the Indians swept the top three spots.
Junior Billy Britton won the tournament at South Hill Country Club after shooting a 76 on the 18-hole, par-71 course. Classmates Jordan Francis and Lewis Mayes followed with 77 and 78, respectively.
“They struck the ball well,” said Southampton Coach William “Buddy” Whitehurst. “They putted well. They brought their ‘A’ game today.”
Before the tournament, Southampton and host Park View were tied at 4-4 on the season. Southampton broke the tie Monday by scoring a 330 to Park View’s 353.
Park View and Southampton have gone back and forth this season. Southampton won the first and third 18-hole matches, and Park View won the second and fourth. Then Southampton won two nine-hole matches in a row before dropping two in a row.
“We lost (last week) on our home course, and they picked themselves up and beat them (Park View) on their home course,” Whitehurst said.
Southampton qualified six players for the regional tournament on Monday, Oct. 3, and Tuesday, Oct. 4, at Stonehouse Golf Course in Toano near Williamsburg. Leaving Sunday, Oct. 2, will be Britton, Francis, Mayes, junior Steve Rhinard, freshman Brandon Munford and sophomore Tyler Peck.
“We’re going to go down on Sunday and will have a practice run on the course to become familiar with it,” Whitehurst said.
