FRANKLIN—Delvontae Boone’s touchdown on a one-yard run early in the fourth quarter followed by Terry Warren’s two-point conversion were the final points for Franklin’s 22-16 win over Surry on Friday night.

“Great win, great dog fight,” said Franklin Coach Darren Parker. “We have gotten our swag back.”

The Broncos on Tuesday night played Surry on the road in a makeup game, winning 60-34.

For counting proposes, the Tuesday game was a non-district game, but the Friday’s game at Armory Field counted as a district game.

Franklin dominated the scoring and led 22-8 in the final quarter, but the Cougars were trying hard to make a run at the Broncos. With 5:33 remaining in the game, Cougars quarterback Timothy Thomas connected on a 24-yard touchdown pass to Reginald Diggs. James Pulley ran the two-point conversion, and the Cougars were trailing the Broncos 22-16.

After a short kick by the Cougars, the Broncos took possession of the ball at their 45-yard line. The success or failure of this drive determined the game.

The Broncos’ play calling strategy kept the ball on the ground with the running of Marcus Stephens, Warren and Latrell Lane.

As the clock winded down, the Cougars took their final timeout with 1:32 remaining. The Broncos advanced the ball into the red zone, but were stopped on the five-yard line as the final horn sounded.

Stephens opened the scoring on the Broncos’ first drive in the first quarter on a three-yard run. He also added the two-point conversion.

Stephens added his second touchdown in the second quarter, but failed on the two-point conversion. Stephens rushed 38 times for 251 yards. The Broncos finished the night with 359 yards on the ground.

The Cougars scored in the second quarter on a Thomas to Diggs 35-yard touchdown pass. Pulley scored on the two-point conversion and the score was 14-8.

The Cougars were driving hard just before the half, but a Cougar pass was picked off by Adam Grant. The score held at 14-8 for the half with the Broncos having the lead.

The Cougars were held to 58 yards on the ground, but in the air, totaled 156 yards.

The Franklin defense was led by Javontae Blacknall with nine tackles and Nathan Jones with seven.
