COURTLAND—Southampton High School senior Ashlee Buehner pitched a perfect game during Tuesday’s non-conference 35-0 win over Franklin.
Buehner gave up no hits, and for the Lady Bronco batters, it was 15 up and 15 down.
The Lady Indians scored their runs in the first three innings, including 18 in the first inning, seven in the second and 10 in the third. The game was called after five innings.
There were a couple of close plays on bunted balls by the Franklin girls, but Southampton catcher Emily Nelson was up to the fielding task as was fellow senior Candace Earls, recording both put outs at first.
Other than a few infield plays, it was all Buehner.
“She had nice velocity today and was able to hit her spots and really just overpowered the Franklin girls,” said Southampton Coach Susan Melbye. “I’m proud of all of our girls. We got everyone in the game and they played the game with respect and were very reserved in celebration in the dugout and in the field. But we’ve got some big tasks ahead of us and will look forward towards Greensville.”
Southampton, which improved to 3-0, played Greensville in Emporia on Thursday for its Southside District season opener. Results were not available as of press time.
Franklin travels to Brunswick for a 4:30 p.m. game today, March 30.
