SEDLEY—With just one baseball field, scheduling Little League practices at Rogers Memorial Park in Sedley has its challenges. Sometimes it involves two teams sharing one field.
Anita Felts, chairwoman of the Sedley Recreation Association, hopes to see that change with the purchase of 2.6 acres for a second ball field.
Before buying the property across from Hubbard Peanut Co. for $20,000, the association will need permission to build the field, said Beth Lewis, director of community development for Southampton County. The property at Fourth Street and Sycamore Avenue is zoned for single-family homes. Baseball fields are allowed with special permission.
The association at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 12, will have a hearing for a conditional-use permit before the Planning Commission at the County Government Office Center in Courtland. The Planning Commission will make a recommendation and the Board of Supervisors will make the final decision.
Felts said the association has an agreement to buy the vacant land from Frank and Judy Drake of Columbus, Ohio. Frank Drake is a former Sedley resident.
“We’ve had some generous donations from the community so we can purchase the property,” Felts said. “We’ve needed an additional field for a number of years.”
The association also plans to build dugouts, a parking lot, concessions stand and restrooms, and install lighting and bleachers. Money will need to be raised, but it’s hoped the ball field can be built by fall, she said.
Donations can be made out to the association and mailed to P.O. Box 29, Sedley, Va., 23878.
The Rogers Memorial Park also has a concession stand, tennis and basketball courts, and playground.
