BOYKINS—A Newsoms-area man injured in a Monday drive-by shooting was flown to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital where he was in good condition on Tuesday morning, the Southampton County Sheriff’s Office reported.
The Sheriff’s Office received a call at about 9 p.m. after Marcus Murphy, 23, of the 20000 block of General Thomas Highway was shot at the Red Barn Food Store in the 18000 block of Beaton Avenue in Boykins.
Murphy was initially taken in a private vehicle to Southampton Memorial Hospital.
The shooting is believed to have been in retaliation of a fight, said Major Gene Drewery. He did not have details on the fight.
The shooter was in a blue sport utility vehicle, Drewery said. A least two others were outside the store at the time; one of them took Murphy to the hospital. No one else was hurt.
It’s believed a shotgun or pistol was used, Drewery said.
A store employee, who would not give her name, said she knows Murphy as a regular customer.
Debbie McManus, owner of Boykins Beans & Ice Cream, heard about the shooting on Tuesday morning from a customer.
“I didn’t hear any details, only one person told me there was a shooting in Boykins at the Red Barn,” McManus said
She heard nothing about a motive, but expected to hear more during her lunch rush.
“I’m disappointed about it and it’s a shame,” McManus said. “Hopefully we can get it under control.”
