Report good news for area

A report released by the Virginia Economic Development Partnership in recent weeks put into writing what many in Western Tidewater have known for some time; our local economy’s tide is beginning to rise.
The report showed that Isle of Wight and Southampton counties ranked in the top five statewide with respect to capital investment projects announced in 2011. That success is a direct result of much hard work done by Isle of Wight’s Department of Economic Development and Franklin Southampton Economic Development Inc.
Both counties combined inked deals worth more than $400 million in direct capital investment, projects that will lead to well over 1,000 jobs.
The construction phase alone will bring additional millions in spending and hundreds of construction jobs to our community.
And if there is any doubt as to the actual economic impact of such projects, feel free to ask any of the hotel, restaurant and convenience store operators who have already felt the positive impact of the repurposing of International Paper’s Franklin Mill.
Indeed, there is much statistical evidence to support that our local economy is on the rebound, and we eagerly await more good news that is almost certain to come.
