High Street Senior Citizens good group to join

To the Editor:

The High Street Senior Citizens meet each week and are usually entertained by various programs given by different folks in the community.

One big event each month is Bingo, to which we all look forward.

There are no fees of any kind. We do give change each week for our Sunshine Fund, from which we send get-well cards, etc., and we are divided into groups, which take turns bringing food each week for a delicious lunch.

Ages vary, with several members being over 80 and others who are very vigorously enjoying their 90s.

Some examples of musical guests who visit us are The Sojourners, who are excellent musicians; The Over the Hill Fun Bunch, who perform at several places locally to the delight of all who hear them; Dr. Roger Crump, pastor of Sycamore Baptist Church, a wonderful singer and speaker; Kaye Weaver, another music teacher and performer; and Al and Connie Yeatman, music and singing.

These are some friends who have visited us periodically, and we certainly appreciate all who come and share their talents with us.

In addition, we have business people, municipal employees, county officials, authorities on the Civil War and Riverkeeper Jeff Turner.

Jim Wright has shared experiences about working with the American Red Cross and generally on his nursing career. Ministers from local churches have come and spoken for us, and The Gingerbread House has always been generous in bringing the children to share songs and hugs, and everyone is delighted when they visit.

There is no way I could name all who have so generously helped us in the past, but please know that everything you do or have done is highly appreciated.

We also owe a huge debt to Franklin Baptist Church, which sponsors us, and David Rabil, who has been an outstanding contributor in making meals for special occasions.

The United Way and Camp Foundations have been unfailing in their financial support, and without these organizations, we could not exist. Many thanks to all of you.

If you are 55 or older, we would love to have you join us. Give us a try, and I think you will enjoy the camaraderie, the entertainment and the food.
