BOYDTON—Nancy Cash of Martinsville set a new Virginia record with a 26-pound, 8-ounce freshwater drum she caught on July 12 at Buggs Island Lake in Boydton, southwest of South Hill.
Cash hooked the 38½-inch drum on a sting silver spoon and battled it for 15 minutes before her fishing partner, Jimmy Cannoy, got a net under it and brought it into the boat.
The record freshwater drum was taken to Bobcat’s Bait and Tackle in Clarksville where Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries biologist Vic DiCenzo confirmed the species, size and weight of the fish.
The previous record drum weighed 22 pounds, 6 ounces and was caught in Kerr Reservoir in 2008.
