CAPRON—Route 58 near Capron is expected to be limited to single lanes in both directions until early this evening after the driver of a tractor-trailer overturned his rig and spilled 300 gallons of fuel.
The crash occurred at 7:45 a.m. today, about one-quarter mile east of Three Creeks Road, said Chris Purzycki, public information officer with the Virginia Department of Transportation.
The driver, whose name was not available, was hauling 30,000 pounds of meat and apparently overcorrected when he lost control of the rig. He was taken to Southampton Memorial Hospital for minor injuries, said Sgt. Greg Jackson.
Both eastbound lanes were blocked and traffic had to be rerouted, Jackson said. The accident occurred within a five-mile construction zone between Capron and Courtland.
“There was no active construction going on in the area at the time,” he said.
State police are continuing their investigation, Jackson said.
