Smith makes 18 assists in SA win

AMELIA—The Southampton Academy volleyball team on Tuesday won its first match of the season, defeating Amelia 3-2.
SA scores were 25-16, 21-25, 26-28, 25-22 and 15-9.
Senior Whitley Smith had 18 assists. Junior Katelyn Newsome had six aces while freshman Ashten Hinkle, eighth-grader Mason Pope, Smith and junior Brooke Whitley each had five.
Newsome had 16 kills while Smith had four.
“It was our first game and the girls had to get used to each other,” said new Head Coach Frank Seal said. “It got better as we went.”
The Lady Raiders took on Blessed Sacrament at 4 p.m. Thursday in Powhatan, but results weren’t available as of press time.
