WINDSOR—Officials with the Town of Windsor would like transform the Windsor Middle School gym into a recreation center after a new school is built.

The proposal will be discussed when Isle of Wight County supervisors and Windsor Town Council meet at 5 p.m. Monday, Sept. 17, at the Colonial Farm Credit building in Windsor. The boards also will discuss economic opportunities with the development of the Shirley T. Holland Intermodal Park.

Mayor Carita Richardson said supervisors voted unanimously to keep the gym, but the county buildings and properties committee “seemed to be in favor of tearing it down” after the Georgie D. Tyler Middle School is built nearby. Construction will begin this year.

The town hopes to use the building for youth and senior activities as well as community meetings.

With Camptown Park in Carrsville and Nike Park in Carrollton, Richardson said the northern and southern portions of the county have places for recreation, but the central portion does not.

“We have no recreation center like they do in other parts of the county,” she said. “Our citizens pay the same taxes everyone else does.”

She said the growth of the intermodal park makes the need for amenities, like a recreation center that much greater.

Richardson said the building was in good condition structurally and the only portion of the school campus made of brick.

It includes public bathrooms, but has no air conditioning. Richardson said the town could use grants to pay for upgrades.

“It’s ready to be used now,” she said.

Supervisor Board Chairman Al Casteen would favor the proposal if the town agrees to operate and maintain it. Otherwise the financial burden on taxpayers would be too great, he said.

“I don’t even want us cutting the grass there,” Casteen said. “I’m willing to give the town the option if it doesn’t cost the county anymore money.”
