You asked: What can be recycled in area localities?

Sorting items for recycling is not necessary in Franklin or Isle of Wight and Southampton counties. Here is a breakdown of what can be recycled.

SOUTHAMPTON COUNTY

Newspapers, loose leaf paper, magazines, junk mail, envelopes, telephone books, aluminum cans, green or brown glass bottles without caps or lids, steel or tin cans, cardboard, cereal boxes without plastic liners and paper towel cardboard rolls can be recycled in Southampton County.

Residents from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday can take recyclables to dump sites at 17158 Johnsons Mill Road in Sedley, 29388 Flaggy Run Road in Flaggy Run, 12427 Ivor Road in Berlin, 33444 Maggie St. in Southampton Meadows Mobile Home Park, 22478 Pine Level Road in Capron, 24389 Park Drive in Adams Grove, 29365 Statesville Road in Newsoms and 18449 General Thomas Highway in Boykins.

From 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Friday and Sunday, items can be taken to 33268 Joyner’s Bridge Road, 22244 Barn Tavern Road in Sebrell, 30080 Monroe Road in Monroe, 22802 Meherrin Road in Courtland, 11264 Old Belfield Road in Drewryville, 16154 Old Branchville Road in Branchville, 36248 General Mahone Blvd. in Ivor and 35350 Unity Road in Unity.

Items also can be taken to the Franklin Transfer Station at 30521 General Thomas Highway rom 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to noon Saturday.

Items don’t have to be separated.

The county also accepts up to five gallons per trip of used motor oil as well as limbs and debris at the sites in Capron, Courtland, Flaggy Run, Ivor, Joyner’s Bridge, Monroe, Newsoms, Sedley and Southampton Meadows.

The site in Unity accepts limbs and debris.

ISLE OF WIGHT COUNTY

Accepted items are the same as Southampton County, except residents can recycle any color glass bottle, aluminum, rinsed milk jugs, bleach, detergent and shampoo bottles.

Plastic bags, electronic equipment, scrap metal, appliances, yard waste as well as motor and cooking oil can also be recycled, but have separate bins at the county’s dumpsites.

Dump sites are at 34010 Carver Road in Camptown; 17634 Carroll Bridge Road, 9421 Whispering Pines Trail and 23254 Stave Mill Road, all in Windsor; 6135 Carrsville Highway and 3403 Burdette Road, both in Carrsville; and 8196 Old Stage Highway and 21203 Boundary Road in Smithfield.

The sites are open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily except Camptown, which is closed on Tuesday and Thursday and open 1 to 7 p.m. Sunday.

FRANKLIN

Aluminum cans, cardboard, catalogs, junk mail, newspaper, office paper and plastic can be recycled through the city’s curbside pickup program. Residents are given a blue bin for recyclables and the items don’t need to be sorted.

The bins picked every other week. Pick-up south of Armory Drive/Second Avenue is on Thursdays and north is on Fridays.

Everyone with a home is charged $3.40 a month, whether or not the resident recycles, said Public Works Director Russ Pace.

There are no drop-off sites in the city for items for recycling, but City Manager Randy Martin said plans are in the works to place bins at city parks and other locations. He also brought up the possibility of using one of Southampton County’s sites to collect recycled items from residents who live in apartments and don’t have blue bins.
