VIRGINIA BEACH—The Southampton High School volleyball team placed second in the third annual Endless Summer Volleyball Tournament at the Hampton Roads Convention Center in Virginia Beach over the weekend.
In the championship round, the Lady Indians fell 1-2 to Northeastern from Elizabeth City, N.C. Match scores 25-22, 19-25 and 11-15.
“We had a great day against some quality opponents,” said Southampton Coach Chad Brock. “We built momentum and played stronger as the day went on.
“In the final match, I think we were mentally tired and started getting away from our normal style of play,” Brock continued. “We came back from 7-3 in the deciding set to get to within one, but couldn’t hold on to it.”
Southampton opened the day with a 2-0 win against Green Run High School of Virginia Beach, winning 25-17 and 25-18. The Lady Indians then fell to Tabb in three sets, 25-23,
18-25 and 13-15.
Southampton defeated Oscar Smith 2-1 with scores of 19-25, 25-9 and 15-9. Advancing to the next round, the Lady Indians faced Deep Creek and advanced to the finals with a 2-0 victory, 25-23, 25-20.
Junior Madison Cabell finished the day with 39 kills and 4 blocks, and junior Madeleine Kahle tallied 33 kills and 6 blocks. Junior Grayson Drake contributed with 50 assists, 9 kills and 4 blocks, and junior Samantha Billups, despite twisting her ankle against Deep Creek, managed 39 assists.
In other action, Southampton defeated Windsor 3-0 during a non-district match on Monday.
Kahle led in kills with 12 and Drake led in assists with 13. The Lady Indians
were 61 of 66 for serving with 10 aces. Cabell had six of the aces.
“Windsor was on their game tonight,” Brock said. “Every time we thought we had a set, they would come back and make it a one- or two-point match late in the set.”
The Southampton junior varsity squad won two, with scores of 25-18, 17-25 and 15-9.
