ISLE OF WIGHT—The Isle of Wight Academy football team won its season opener in the Virginia Commonwealth Conference with a 41-15 trouncing of Kenston Forest.

The Chargers racked up 248 of their 330 total yards on the ground with senior Mat Brummett leading the way with eight carries for 90 yards and two touchdowns.

The Charger defense held the Kavaliers to 130 total yards for the game.

“We played very well at all ends of the ball,” said Charger Coach Dale Chapman. “That’s what I’ve challenged them to do.”

The strong defense was bolstered by interceptions from seniors Hunter Triplett and Alex Fronfelter and freshman L.J. Walters.

Junior quarterback Brandon Saxby went 4-9 for 74 yards and two touchdowns, while Fronfelter had two catches for 42 yards and two touchdowns.

The Chargers scored first with a 47-yard touchdown run for Gage Rogers off a reverse pitch from Brummett. The extra point was good for sophomore kicker Josh Wehi and the Chargers took a 7-0 lead with 7:20 left in the first quarter.

A Kavalier fumble set the Chargers up with first-and-goal from the 5-yard line. A hand-off to Rogers went for three yards. Saxby threw two incomplete passes before Brummett scored on a two-yard blast. The Wehi kick was good and IWA took a 14-0 lead with 5:52 left in the first.

Saxby hit Fronfelter on an 11-yard touchdown and Wehi’s kick was good to give the Chargers a 21-0 lead with 3:36 left in the first.

IWA scored again on a 31-yard pass play from Saxby to Fronfelter. The Wehi kick was good and the Chargers took a 28-0 lead with 7:22 left in the half.

On the ensuing Charger possession Triplett scored on a 20-yard run. The Wehi kick was good and IWA took a 34-0 lead into halftime.

Kenston Forest opened the second-half scoring with a touchdown and two-point conversion that cut the Charger lead to 34-8 with 8:42 left in the third. On the next drive IWA answered with a 72-yard touchdown run by Brummett. Junior Corey Hollaman missed the extra-point try and IWA took a 41-8 lead with 6:48 left in the third quarter.

The Kavaliers scored the final points of the game on a touchdown with 2:19 to go, making the final score 41-15.
