COURTLAND—Southampton High School senior Jerry Wright scored four touchdowns to lead the Indians to their first win of the season on Friday night.

Southampton defeated Windsor 48-27 in a game that was much closer than the score.

Southampton had 333 yards of total offense to Windsor’s 282. The Indians rushed for 264 yards and passed for 75 yards. The Dukes rushed for 121 yards and passed for 160.

Both teams lost two fumbles and each had one interception.

Windsor fell to 1-3 and Southampton improved to 1-3.

“I think the three losses helped prepare us for tonight,” said Southampton Coach Wes Griffith. “Those were three tough teams we played. Windsor is a tough team.”

Griffith was pleased with the defense, which was without starting senior linebacker Cecil Lowe. Lowe was injured during last week’s game against Franklin.

Windsor Coach Chuck Parrish said his team didn’t play well.

“We had to tackle and be more physical,” Parrish said.

Southampton opened scoring on the second play of the game when Wright scored on a 42-yard run. The extra point failed.

With 2:24 left in the first quarter, senior Jamal Johnson scored on a 46-yard run. The extra point was good, giving the Indians a 13-0 lead.

Early in the second quarter, Windsor junior quarterback Justice Chapman scored on a seven-yard run. The kick by freshman Tyler Fontenot was good.

With 5:20 left in the half, Windsor senior Sharod Patterson caught an interception on the 2-yard line from sophomore quarterback Coby Williams.

Southampton came back with Wright scoring from two yards out. Junior Aaron Williams picked up the extra two points, giving the Indians a 20-7 lead.

With 38 seconds left in the half, Johnson returned a 79-yard punt for another touchdown, giving Southampton a 26-7 halftime lead.

Windsor junior Caleb Dundlow opened the second half by returning the opening kickoff for a touchdown. Fontenot’s kick was good.

With 4:50 left in the quarter, Chapman scored on a two-yard run, making the score 26-21.

Southampton senior Saquan Fenner on the return kick ran the ball for a 74-yard touchdown. The conversion failed, but the Indians took a 32-21 lead.

With 43 seconds left in the third quarter, Wright ran for a 50-yard touchdown. The two-point conversion was good.

Wright scored his final touchdown on a 41-yard run and senior Trevoris Evans picked up the two-point conversion, giving the Indians a 48-21 lead.

Chapman threw a 13-yard pass to sophomore Woody Greene for the final score of the game.

Wright rushed for 149 yards for Southampton. Chapman was the leading rusher for Windsor with 92 yards.

Chapman also went 11-for-19 in the air for 160 yards.
