COURTLAND—A hit from a sport utility vehicle to the driver’s side door of Joycene Scott’s car crushed her left leg and arm, broke five ribs and left her cousin dead.

Seven weeks after the accident on Armory Drive at the exit ramp to the Route 58 bypass, Scott will return home to Courtland, where a party is planned for 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 29.

“It’s been a really tough road,” said the Rev. Annette Williams, who is Scott’s pastor at New Covenant Church in Capron and a good friend.

Williams has visited or spoken with Scott daily since the Aug. 11 crash blamed on an alleged drunk driver.

Christopher Lee Bailey, 26, of Gates, N.C., was charged with involuntary manslaughter in connection with the head-on collision that killed Christopher Roosevelt Scott, 52, of Norfolk. Christopher Scott was a passenger in a PT Cruiser driven by Joycene Scott, 45. Bailey was driving a 2006 GMC Envoy.

Joycene Scott underwent two, six-hour surgeries and had her spleen removed while at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, Williams said. She has a rod that extends from her left hip to her foot. She also had rods put in her left arm.

“She’s not able to walk on her own and she will not recover 100 percent. Maybe 75 percent,” Williams said.

Christopher Scott’s finance, Sandra Thompson of Norfolk, was hospitalized with a broken neck and back. Joycene’s son, Mathkea, was treated and released, but then returned to the hospital for internal bleeding, Williams said.

“It was such a tragic accident,” she said.

The welcome home gathering will be held at Joycene Scott’s home at 24367 Washington Drive.
