ISLE OF WIGHT–Murder suspect Joseph “Jay” Joyner Jr. on Monday waived his right to a preliminary hearing.

In doing so, Joyner agreed there’s enough evidence against him for the case to continue on to Isle of Wight County Circuit Court.

Appearing in the Isle of Wight County Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court, Joyner is accused of killing his father and stepmother on April 27. The suspect allegedly shot Joe Joyner, 62, in the back of the head with a shotgun in the woods of the couple’s home at 31334 Walters Highway near Carrsville. Jay Joyner also allegedly beat to death Sandra Joyner, 58, inside the home.

Their bodies were discovered after Sandra Joyner, a nurse at Southampton Memorial Hospital for 35 years, failed to show for work.

Joe Joyner, a former manager for the particleboard plant for Union Camp Corp. and Norboard Co. of Deposit, N.Y., in November made an unsuccessful bid for county supervisor.

The Sheriff’s Office has never given a motive for the murders, but friends of the victims indicated it was over money.

After Joyner’s arrest, the Sheriff’s Office reported that a witness notified police about seeing a man who looked like Joyner park his vehicle on West Blackwater Road and throw something into the Blackwater River. The suspect apparently would take the route to travel from his home to his father’s home.

Investigators recovered from the river the gun they believe was used to kill Joe Joyner.

Investigators also developed a number of leads from interviews and evidence found at the scene.
