We’re glad to hear that the Franklin Planning Commission supports redeveloping the old Hayden School.

The results will surely be better than what we have right now — an eyesore.

Senior Services of Southeastern Virginia wants to convert the historic black high school on Oak Street into a 62,000-square-foot, government-subsidized housing complex for seniors at a cost of $10 million. There would be 25 apartments, with 10 in the original building and 15 in a new wing.

The complex would include a community center that could provide 60 jobs. Also included in the project would be an adult daycare center, black history museum, café and Head Start facility.

Senior Services has indicated it is committed to the project, and although not all the financing is in place, several lenders are willing to finance the project.

The funding is contingent upon final approval of rezoning the property from residential to business.

The planning commission during a Wednesday work session threw in its hat of support, but it will be up to Franklin City Council to make that decision.

A public hearing on the matter will be held during a 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 26, meeting at City Hall.
