WAVERLY—Virginia State Police are investigating the shooting of a man by a Waverly police officer during a domestic dispute.
The man, who was not identified, was taken to Southside Regional Medical Center in Petersburg and then flown to VCU Medical Center in Richmond after the 1:30 a.m. Thursday shooting, police said.
His condition was not known on Friday morning.
Waverly Police and a Sussex County Sheriff’s deputy responded to a 911 call for a domestic dispute at the home in the 100 block of New Street. When police arrived and attempted to arrest the man, he refused and a struggle followed, police said. That’s when the officer allegedly shot the man.
The deputy, who was not identified, also was injured during the struggle and taken to Southside Regional Medical Center for serious, but non-life threatening injuries.
The incident remains under investigation by state police.
The Waverly officer was not identified.
