WINDSOR—During a meeting from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 29, residents can provide input about what they would like to see in the way of development for Windsor along the new U.S. Route 460.

The meeting will be held at Windsor High School.

The 55-mile, $1.4 billion toll road will connect Suffolk to Petersburg and have an exit in Windsor. Construction is anticipated to start in 2014 and be completed in 2018.

“We’ll be asking where they’d like to see development and what type of development,” said Richard Rudnicki with the Isle of Wight County Planning and Zoning Department. “We sat down with the town of Windsor. We want our plan to mesh with them.”

“This complements our project very well with our comprehensive plan and the ideas we’re kicking around for the 460 corridor,” added Dennis Carney, director of Windsor’s Planning and Zoning. “We can take some stuff to improve safety along the road and lead to a nicer-looking Windsor. We’re fairly certain, from what we’ve been told, that people are very receptive toward it.”

A survey on the county’s website asks residents for input about development in Windsor. Questions are related to protecting the small-town character of Windsor, preserving the county’s rural nature, improving the industrial park and implementing 1- to 2-cent increase in the real estate taxes to improve infrastructure, fire and rescue, or parks.

“The surveys will be collected through the meeting,” said Rudnicki. “We’ll have a second meeting, probably in the new year, that has survey responses included.”
