COURTLAND—Southampton County supervisors on Monday night voted 6-0 to have a public hearing for selling the property where Ivor Elementary School once stood.

“This property was an eyesore,” said Berlin-Ivor Supervisor Ronnie West. “There has been some expressed interest in the property and we have spent $60,000 to get it right. I feel certain someone would buy it and get it back on the tax rolls.”

West was referring to the $59,354 the county spent last year to demolish the building on Proctors Bridge Road.

Franklin District Supervisor Barry Porter believes the county can get market value for the land.

“We will probably have more than one person interested,” Porter said.

The school closed in 2001 when Nottoway Elementary School opened and was turned over to the county the following year. Unsuccessful attempts were made to find someone to occupy the building.

The county’s options for selling include listing it with a Realtor, negotiating a private sale, seeking sealed bids or by auction. County Administrator Mike Johnson will let supervisors decide how it should be sold. An asking price has not been set.

The vacant property is assessed at $64,200 or $8,000 an acre, and is zoned for single-family homes. The Town of Ivor has public water nearby.

The public hearing will be held during the supervisors’ 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 25, meeting at the county government center in Courtland.
