FRANKLIN—The Franklin and Southampton High School soccer game ended in a 1-1 tie on Friday.

“We played well in the match, and had lots of scoring chances,” said SHS Coach Scott Edwards. “We out shot Franklin 21 shots to six in the match. We have to figure a way to convert on our chances. We had five or six in near the goal and did not get them on frame.”

The Indians were up by a goal over Franklin after the first half.

In the second half, the Indians scored on a penalty kick, but the score was recalled and the kick had to be retaken.

“One of my players stepped into the penalty area during the kick and by rule, they do a re-kick,” Edwards said.

The Indians second penalty kick was kicked directly to Franklin keeper Nathan Jones.

“Nathan has been big for us all year,” said FHS Coach Clay Hyatt. “To have a second straight PK stop for us was really big.”

Franklin’s Devon Stewart tied the game late in the second half, forcing the game into overtime and with neither team able to score the game was called a tie.

“Devon’s goal showed what our team was about that night,” Hyatt said. “It was a real hustle goal.”

The Indians are next scheduled to host Prince Edward today, March 25, and Greensville on Wednesday, March 27. Both games will be at 7 p.m.

“We need to win both of them going into spring break,” Edwards said.

The Broncos are scheduled to play at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 28, when they host Essex High School.
