COURTLAND—The Southampton High School softball team started the defense of their Southside District softball title with a 14-3 season opening win over Prince Edward Wednesday.

The Lady Indians sent 33 hitters to the plate during the course of the mercy rule shortened six-inning game.

“It was a good way to start the season,” said SHS Coach Susan Melbye. “We put the bat on the ball, and all 14 girls that batted reached base.”

Junior TaLisha Jenkins, who went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles, 2 RBIs and one run scored, led Southampton’s scoring at the plate. Senior Emily Nelson had a double and triple of her own. Junior Kaylee Edwards and sophomore Courtney Greene each added a pair of RBIs.

On the mound, Greene scattered four hits over five innings, but three walks accounted for the three Eagle runs.

“The girls played pretty solid defense behind Courtney. It was a great way to start the season,” Melbye said.

The Lady Indians host the Greensville High School Eagles Thursday, March 28 at 4:30 p.m.
