Raider nets third hat trick

Powhatan—Southampton Academy sophomore Russell Ballance netted his third hat trick of the season, as the Raiders defeated Virginia Commonwealth Conference opponent Blessed Sacrament-Huguenot 5-1 on Wednesday.
The Raiders improved to 11-0-2 overall while improving to 4-0-2 in the VCC.
“After finishing 1-10-1 last season, it’s humbling to be a part of this team and special season,” said SA Coach Jamie Weist. “Our players have great chemistry and a passion for the game. “
Also leading for the Raiders were junior Johnny Tribbett scoring the other two goals, while senior Zach Best had four assists in the game giving him 20 on the season.
“Our goal has always been to win the Conference and remains that, regardless of our record, ” Weist said. “We are improving each game and really having fun.”
The Raiders next travel to face off with VCC rival Isle of Wight Academy at 4 p.m. on Monday, April 22.
In Action from Monday:
The Raiders tied Fuqua School 4-4 despite mounting a 3-1 lead at halftime on two goals by Ballance and one from Best.
“The Falcons came out with much more intensity in the second half taking a 4-3 lead,” Weist said.
With five minutes remaining in the game, Tribbett scored the tying goal off an assist from Senior Captain Alex Parker.
Neither team could score in double overtime.
