Two local softball players help college to ranking

Two local girls that started their softball careers in the Southampton Sussex Recreation League have helped Randolph Macon Yellow Jackets College Softball team finish the season ranked 22nd in the Nation among Division III colleges. Michalann Camp, a senior, and Jenna Best a freshman, played key roles in the success of the team. The Yellow Jackets finished the season 33-7 overall and were 15-5 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC). The team finished ranked 18th in the nation for total win/loss percentage (.825). The Yellow Jackets 41 total home runs ranked fourth in the country. The team also ranked seventh in the nation for home runs per game (1.03 per game).
Senior Michalann Camp started her freshmen year playing catcher and had the highest batting average on the team that year. The next three years she started at third base for the Yellow Jackets. Camp appeared in 41 of the 43 games played this year. She was an anchor of a player at the third base position, which is one of the toughest positions to play in collegiate softball. Camp finished the year with a fielding percentage of .908 overall and .918 in the conference.
As a junior, Camp was awarded the ODAC All-Tournament Team and also made the All-Academic Team. Camp has excelled in the classroom as well making the Dean’s List every semester she has attended Randolph Macon. Michalann began her softball career playing for Courtland Softball Recreational team. She then played for the Wakefield Hornets Softball Team and Southampton Academy. Camp was a 2009 graduate of Southampton Academy.
Freshman Jenna Best started the year as a designated player and eventually worked into a starting spot in the outfield. Best also appeared in 41 of the 43 games played this year. Best, pitching behind two seniors, made six appearances on the mound and had an Earned Run Average of 1.88 overall and 1.05 in the conference. The Yellow Jackets are looking forward to Best taking on the key role as a pitcher in her sophomore year. Jenna finished the regular season batting .337 overall. Best had five home runs and nine doubles. She was also selected as an outfielder to be on the Second Team All-Conference in the ODAC. Jenna began her career playing for Sedley Softball Recreational team and then also played for the Wakefield Hornets. Best continued her career playing for 14UOrion Hunter, 16U Hampton Roads Vipers and 18U Virginia Legends Elite. Jenna played Junior Varsity for Southampton High School and later transferred to Great Bridge High School. She was a starter on the 2009 AAA State Championship Team from Great Bridge.
