VIRGINIA BEACH—After the 37-0 defeat against Bishop Sullivan Catholic High School, Isle of Wight Academy head coach Dale Chapman admitted that he did not see much of anything he liked.

“We started out having to delay the game because of lightning,” Chapman said. “Then it rained the whole game. We’ve got a lot of young guys, and they were not playing great against the conditions. It just kind of snowballed from there.

“All in all, we just did not play our type of football.”

Chapman said it started off fairly well against the bigger team, which plays a division above the Chargers.

“Our guys were playing pretty tough, but it went south pretty quick,” he said. “We were not able to put drives together, offensively, we ended up punting a lot.”

And with the amount of 3-and-outs that the offense were producing, the defense spent a lot of time on the field.

“The defense just gets tired,” Chapman said.

There were a couple of bright spots, however. The defense was pretty good against the run.

“They have a wide receiver, (Jamil Kamara), who just made some phenomenal catches,” Chapman said. “Their running game wasn’t all that effective as it has been in the past — we were pretty good at stopping them. They just had a lot of long passing plays that resulted in scores, so our secondary needs to work on stopping the pass.”

The play at quarterback and wide receiver was also a potential bright spot, if the Chargers can get the running game going better.

“We were not terrible on the passing game, but we could not get into any type of grove at all on the ground game,” Chapman said. “And if you can’t establish a ground game, it makes the passing game even tougher. You have to be balanced.”

The Chargers will play the Portsmouth Christian Patriots in Isle of Wight Aug. 30 at 7 p.m.
