Southampton wins first tourney match

COURTLAND—The Southampton High School volleyball team defeated York in four sets 26-24, 25-18, 14-25 and 25-19.
Grayson Drake was a perfect 10/10 serving with 1 ace, 18 assists, 2 blocks and 3 kills. Kaylee Edwards had 9 aces, 8 kills and 1 block. Madeleine Kahle had 5 aces, 8 kills and 1 block. Samantha Billups had1 ace, 9 assists, 1 kill and 1 block. Eve Robertson was a perfect 3/3 serving with 8 kills. Jenna Billups was a perfect 13/13 serving with 1 ace. Megan Duck had 3 aces, 4 kills and 1 block.
Sydney Sumner (Y) had 14 kills, 2 blocks, 10 digs and 1 ace. Mackenzie Chaffin (Y) had 8 kills, 2 aces and 1 block, Maddie Dillard (Y) had 9 kills, 4 digs, 3 aces and 3 blocks.
“Tonight was a battle,” said Indians Coach Chad Brock. “These are the kind of macthes that you love to be in. From the scouting reports, I knew they had some big kids that could bang and block. We played to our strengths and won as a team.
“As you can see from the stats anybody on our team can get the job done. We played to our strengths and pulled out the win.”
Southampton will travel to Colonial Heights today to play Warhill, who defeated Colonial Heights in three straight sets. Southampton previously lost to Warhill.
“We are playing much better ball now,” Brock said. “If we play like we did tonight we have a lot more
volleyball to play this year.”
A win Wednesday would put Southampton in the finals and give the team a berth in the regional tournament next week.
Southampton closes regular season with win
The Southampton High School Volleyball Team closed out its regular season on Halloween Night at Surry by defeating the Tigers in straight sets 25-2, 25-18 and 25-9.
It was the last district match for seven of the Indians. SHS will graduate seven seniors at the end of the season. With the win the Indians finish in first place in the district at 16-0. Their overall record is 20-3 heading into the conference tournament.
