IW school board changes leaders

ISLE OF WIGHT—There was a change of leadership Thursday during the Isle of Wight County School Board meeting. Julia Perkins of the Windsor District has been voted as chairwoman, and Kent Hildebrand of the Newport District has been elected vice chairman. Robert Eley of the Carrsville District was previously the chairman, and Perkins was vice chairwoman. Tina Hill won the seat for the Hardy District.
The construction on the Georgie D. Tyler Middle School in Windsor is reportedly on schedule, said Kenita Bowers, spokeswoman for Isle of Wight County Schools.
“There has been substantial completion in Phase I. Final Phase I completion is expected for February 2014 with delivery and installation of furniture scheduled for May 2014,” said Bowers. “Decommissioning of the old Windsor Middle School along with salvaging any equipment and furniture is slated to begin in June 2014.”
Finance Director Christina Berta offered revised dates on the fiscal year 2014-15 budget calendar, which were approved:
Superintendent Katrise Perera will present the proposed budget to the school board at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 6, in Smithfield High School.
The School Board will have a public meeting on the proposed budget at 6 p.m. Thursday, March 13, in the Robert Claud Sr. Board Room at the Isle of Wight County Courthouse.
The School Board will meet to approve the budget at the central office, which is behind Westside Elementary School in Smithfield on Thursday, March 20. The time to be announced later.
In other business, RRMM was also awarded the contract for HVAC and Windows at Hardy Elementary School.
