FRANKLIN—Elections for Franklin City Council are set for Tuesday, May 6, and the offices of the mayor, ward 3, ward 5 and ward 6 will be up.

Mayor Raystine Johnson-Ashburn said that she would seek reelection.

“I feel that two years is not enough to take care of what I’d like to accomplish,” she said. “We have accomplished a lot, but I’d like to take it even further for the next two years. I am hoping that the citizens would see fit to reelect me.”

In Ward 3, Councilman Greg McLemore said he was unsure if he would seek reelection.

Ward 5 Councilwoman Mary E. Hilliard, who has served on the council since 1988, said she would seek another term.

“Franklin has a lot of growing to do, and I want to be a part of that,” she said. “We have grown, but I want to continue growing.

“I feel that with my experience on city council, and my longevity, and with the city manager being here only two years, that I could be an asset.”

Ward 6 Councilman Donald “Don” Blythe Sr. could not be reached for comment. Blythe has been out since suffering from a stroke while in Portsmouth in October 2012.

Jim Councill, former Franklin mayor, said he had seen Blythe recently, and that he was in rehabilitation at Lake Prince Woods in Suffolk.

“He seems to be responding well,” he said.
