Virginia State takes two wins against Chowan University

MURFREESBORO—The Virginia State University women’s and men’s teams both achieved victory over the Chowan University Hawks and women’s and men’s and teams at the Helms Center on the Chowan University campus on Monday. The Lady Trojans were ranked No. 1 in the northern division of the Central Collegiate Athletic Conference and the Trojans ranked No. 6 of the same conference. The Lady Hawks and the Hawks were both ranked No. 4 in CIAA standing before the start of the game.
To be the No. 1 team, the Lady Trojans had their hands full as the Lady Hawks gave them a run for their money. The Lady Hawks had the lead in much of the first half as VSU fought to tie the score 4 times. After tieing the score at 26 all with 4:56 remaining in the half, the Lady Trojans opened the lead to 35-30 by the end of the half. In the second half, the Lady Hawks fighting from behind, were able to tie the score twice at 39 and 41 all before the visitors gained control of the game by opening a lead that the Lady Hawks were not able to close. The Lady Trojans pumped up their game to take the victory 69- 57.
The Lady Hawks had two players in double figures. They were Rachel Gostomske with 14 points and Courtni Williams with 11 points. The Lady Trojans were led by Lamesha Deal with 15 points and Shakirah Gray and Jessica Lyons, both with 14 points.
For the Hawks, after tieing the game at 3 all in the opening minute of the game, the Trojans opened the lead to as much as 11 points in the first half. By the end of the half the Trojans held a 35-25 lead. In the second half, the Hawks were able to close within 4 points of the Trojans 39-43 at the 11:37 remaining in the game. But the Trojans fired up their offense and pushed their lead to as much as 16 points. The Trojans took the win with a score of 76-62.
The Hawks had three players in double figures. They were Ashante Ross with 18 points, Alex Tharp with 13 points and Mark Anthony Buright with 11 points. The Trojans had four players in double figures. They were James Vann with 15 points, and Chris Grier and Lamar Kearse both had 13 points each, and Amiel Terry had 12 points.
