Sponsor a 4-H camper

To the Editor:
Every year more than 200 youth have an opportunity to participate in the life-changing experience of Isle of Wight/Southampton Junior 4-H Camp. This camp, which takes place at the scenic Airfield 4-H Educational Center near Wakefield, provides kids ages 9 to 13 an opportunity to experience a different environment away from their daily routine. At camp, kids have fun playing games outside, singing songs and making friends. They make memories that last a lifetime and, underneath it all, they learn life skills.
Yes, acquiring life skills is the hidden secret behind 4-H Camp. Research shows that after attending 4-H Camp, youth are more responsible, independent and confident. As a result of camp activities, they are better able to work on a team, make new friends and express their opinions to others. Camp is a place where youth feel a sense of belonging amongst their peers and mastery as a result of their daily classes.
Given that 4-H Camp produces so many positive outcomes, as the Extension Agent for 4-H Youth Development, I want all youth in Isle of Wight and Southampton counties to have an opportunity to attend! Unfortunately, though, funds get in the way. This year, Isle of Wight/Southampton Junior 4-H Camp costs $225, including lodging, meals, program supplies and a T-shirt. While this is a subsidized rate, and cheaper than many other week-long overnight camps, we are making efforts to make camp accessible to everyone.
If you have ever had the magical experience of camp, or if you never had the opportunity to attend camp but want to be sure that another child does not miss out, please consider sponsoring a 4-H Camper this year. Any donation is appreciated. For more information, please call me at 365-6258 or email cbrock7@vt.edu.
